Getting to know you at the Walhalla City Hall

If for no other reason, the Walhalla mayor last night simply wanted his city council to meet and get to know the latest two men who have an idea for the former Oconee Courthouse. That’s why Mayor Edwards invited Tom Markovich and Herb Witter to last night’s meeting of the city council. Although Markovich made comments along the line of what he told County Council last week, Edwards said he was not expecting a presentation. City leaders and the developers have hope that the Streetscape project would lend itself well to converting the old courthouse building into a hotel. Last night’s get together did give Mayor Pro-tem Tjay Bagwell the chance to ask Markovich if everyone should still refer to the hotel project as the “Courthouse Inn.” That’s the name that John Powell and Jim Carswell had dubbed their project before they ran into a brick wall trying to find financing. But Markovich said, as yet, they don’t have a name for what they want to do.
