Greenville Zoo mourns the loss of Ladybird

Ladybird2Ladybird, one of the Greenville Zoo’s beloved African elephants, has died. She was monitored closely over the last month after an episode of colic or abdominal pain—the result of the change in weather. Ladybird received oral fluids and high fiber foods and had showed some signs of improvement. Ladybird came to the Greenville Zoo in 2006 from a Florida wildlife park to be a companion to Joy, the zoo’s other female African elephant. Zoo staff intends to monitor Joy closely and will talk with experts about transferring her to another zoo since regulations prohibit zoos from holding single elephants.
