Handgun seized during arrest

A handgun was seized during the arrest of a man Tuesday night in rural southern Oconee County. A deputy was alerted to a suspicious van in the vicinity of Douglas Drive and Timberlake Drive. After determining there were outstanding warrants for the man found standing there, the officer ordered the suspect to place his hands behind his back. According to the Sheriff’s Office, “After not complying with the deputy’s command and seeing him attempting to take something out of his waistband, the officer deployed his Taser, upon which the officer saw a handgun leave Kilby’s right hand and land next to the van as he was falling to the ground. After appearing to reach for the gun a second time, another short burst from the Taser was delivered….” Officers say the weapon had a fully-loaded magazine but the chamber was empty. Authorities charged Joseph Coy Kilby with resisting arrest and unlawful carrying of a pistol. They identified the outstanding warrants for Kilby’s arrest as charges of second degree burglary, petty larceny, and possession of implements being used in a crime. Kilby is 28 years old, and authorities listed two addresses for him: Seneca and Pickens.
