Hearings to address future passenger rail

  1. Three public hearings take place next week in the Carolinas and Georgia to gather public opinion for the development of a passenger rail corridor plan for new service between Atlanta and Charlotte. One of those hearings takes place in the Greenville area—-from 4 to 7 p-m Wednesday, June 5 in Greer at 301 E. Poinsett Street. The Atlanta to Charlotte Passenger Rail Corridor is an extension of the Southeast High-Speed Rail Corridor, which is under development between Charlotte and Washington, D-C. The extension would travel southeast through parts of South Carolina and into Atlanta. Alternative corridor routes have not yet been established but are to be made final as part of the public hearing process. Among the potential routes is the Norfolk Southern corridor, also referred to as the Southern Crescent Corridor route. Another is an I-85 corridor.  The public is encouraged to attend a hearing or view a 24/7 virtual meeting on the project website at www.dot.ga.gov/AtlantaCharlotteHSR beginning June 4 ad extending through July 4.
