HS Football: Norton’s long FG sends Walhalla to 2-1

Walhalla freshman Tristan Garrens intercepted a Liberty pass at the 40-yard line in a 13-13 game to set up a memorable moment in Walhalla football history. As time expired, long-snapper T.J. Galloway sent the ball back to holder Ward Sprouse, and kicker Brett Norton put his foot into it. Norton’s kick, from 57 yards, was good, and gave the Razorbacks a 16-13 win over the previously unbeaten Red Devils. According to records from the South Carolina High School League through the 2013 season, Norton’s kick ties for 5th longest in Palmetto State history. Others who have nailed 57-yarders are former South Carolina Gamecock Marty Simpson, while a kicker at Spring Valley High in 1989, and Mark Fowble from Richland Northeast, who did it in 1986. Norton’s field goal is the longest recorded in the state since the record was set in 2005 with a 65-yarder from Riverside’s Richard Jackson.

Elsewhere Friday night, West-Oak led 7-6 at halftime before falling on the road at Berea, 30-7. Seneca moves to 3-0 with a 55-14 win over T.L. Hanna. The Bobcats will host Walhalla next Friday in 96.3 WGOG’s High School Game of the Week. In our broadcast game this week, it was a battle of undefeated’s, as Daniel came out the victory over Westside 24-9.
