Ice melted but salt and sand remain

Friday’s brush with “Ole Man Winter” created an ice storm, now becoming a memory only. By late in the afternoon Friday, the S.C. Department of Transportation deployed the following resources statewide: 329 maintenance employees actively involved in road operations; 896 tons of salt, 443 tons of sand; 259 thousand gallons of salt brine; and 144 snow plows, salt spreaders, sprayers and graders. The winter storm moved through the Upstate to affect areas south of the I-85 corridor. The precipitation was scattered and mixed between rain, freezing rain, and sleet.
