Inmates scoop up litter

Under the direction of sheriff’s officer Brandon Meadows, Oconee prisoners have been cleaning dump sites and picking up litter across the county.  More than one thousand pounds of litters were removed from dump sites and 27 bags of trash were taken from from a stretch of highway 28 from near the Walhalla city limit to the Poplar Springs Bridge.  The inmates also cleared litter from Wood Road, Doyle Street, and the Snow Creek Road.    So far, between 20 to 25 reports have been received through a new litter initiative. “I encourage our citizens to continue to take a proactive stance as we are and have been in cleaning up the litter problem in Oconee County,” says Sheriff Crenshaw.  “You can go to the Sheriff’s Office website at www.oconeelaw.com and click on the Report Litter link to report litter sites in Oconee County.  That information goes to Corporal Meadows and he has already used reports we have received to clean up these sites, so this has been a great success.”   The Sheriff’s Office encourages motorists to use caution when traveling in areas where inmate labor is being used to pick-up litter.  The inmates will be dressed in yellow reflective vests and law enforcement vehicles will be clearly marked and signs will be posted reflecting that inmate labor is being used.
