“It has been determined that there was hazing”

A statement this afternoon from Dr. Michael Thorsland, Oconee superintendent of education, says, “It has been determined that there was hazing.” And the Walhalla police continue to investigate as to whether criminal charges are appropriate. Thorsland’s statement also says district administration is proceeding with disciplinary action and “the students are no longer on the soccer team.” Earlier five Walhalla soccer players had been suspended. The Thorsland statement also addresses the status of who is now coaching the team. It reads: “Bobby Noriszan will take over as head coach for the remainder of the year and will be assisted by Miguel Resendiz and Alex Flores.” There is known sentiment for Michael Estes, wo was replaced as coach. There’s already an online petition in his behalf seeking his re-instatement.  The Thorsland statement concludes this way: “The School District of Oconee does not tolerate bullying, hazing, or harassment of any kind and students are urged to immediately report any such conduct to teachers, administrators, or any other person in authority.”
