Jets bench Sanchez for McElroy, not Tebow

Greg McElroy will get the start Sunday for the New York Jets against the San Diego Chargers

The New York Jets’ awful year mixed with soap opera continued on Tuesday when head coach Rex Ryan finally decided to bench struggling quarterback Mark Sanchez, but leaped over backup Tim Tebow to say he’d start third-stringer Greg McElroy in Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers. Ryan’s decision came after Sanchez had another awful performance in a 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans Monday night that eliminated the Jets from playoff contention. When asked why he chose McElroy over Tebow, Ryan was vague, saying, “I can answer this question a million ways, frontward, backward, sideways, anything else. It’s my decision and I based it on a gut feeling or whatever.”
