Litter pickup campaign underway

Inmate Litter Pickip Four Inmate Litter Pickup Three On a sunny and warm late winter day the Oconee Sheriff’s Office started its spring litter pickup campaign. Inmates from the Detention Center, supervised by Corp. Tim Rice, picked up trash on highway 11—south between Mountain Road and highway 123. Rice, the county’s environmental services officer, also led the inmates to pick up trash Tuesday on Camp Road near Five Forks community. The inmate details concentrated on the areas where the Sheriff’s Office got the most complaints, but in the days and weeks to come Rice promises the inmates will address other areas. Littering remains against the law in South Carolina. The guilty are subject to 30 days in jail or fines of up to $1,092.50, or both. And Rice says, “South Carolina state law says that if you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the highway and its emergency lights on, if possible, you are required to move over if you are traveling on a four-lane highway, or if not, you are required to slow down.”
