Major League Baseball Playoffs

The Detroit Tigers’ American League Championship Series rout of the New York Yankees ended Thursday with an 8-1 blowout in Detroit to give the Tigers a 4-game sweep and a ticket to the World Series. The Tigers’ scoring included two-run homers in the fourth inning from Miguel Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta. The Yankees, who hit just .157 in the series, scored in just three of 39 innings, and never led in any of the games, were swept in a postseason series for the first time in 32 years. The Tigers will meet the winner of the National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants in the World Series, with Game 1 set for next Wednesday.  The defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants 8-3 in St. Louis last night to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series. Game 5 will be played Friday night in St. Louis.
