Marvin Hill wrote the history of WGOG

One of the first announcers in WGOG’s 57 years has written the first and only history of the station that settled in what had been a cotton patch and went on the air on tax day in 1959.  The retired WGOG manager Marvin Hill realized that if ever someone wrote the station’s history, he likely would be best suited to do the job.  It took three years and was quite an experience, as it brought Hill back in touch with memories and many of the employees who worked at the station.  The history covers the station’s 1959 start through 2001.  Work, for those who’ve tried it, can be a four-letter word.  But neither Hill nor many of WGOG’s employees considered what they did was work.  More like fun, he says, especially in those early years–and especially in a small town where there had been no radio station.
