Mast-style poles not part of Streetscape

Walhallans are surprised to learn that traffic light poles with long arms are not part of what Streetscape will deliver.  Some people apparently had assumed that burying telephone and electric power lines downtown would also mean the replacement of traffic light lines strung across Main Street with mast-style poles, such as those in Clemson.  But while those poles are available, they are expensive, according to a DOT spokesman.  Pete Poore, director of communications, says, “They are expensive….can be anywhere from $60 to $80 thousand dollars to install those masts.  They are purely cosmetic. There would be no real technical or functional purpose for SC DOT to replace the cabled signals with those types of masts.”
