Mayor makes statement on the Hammond case

At least for now, the job of the Seneca police chief and those of the police officers involved in what happened to Zachary Hammond are safe.  Mayor Dan Alexander last night conceded that Seneca is a city divided but, he said, there has been a lot of speculation and a lot of lies being told to twist the truth.  Alexander began reading a statement last night after four people during public comment referred to the unsolved investigation into Hammond’s death last summer in a restaurant parking lot.   One of those speakers, activist Jack Logan of Greenville, called for the mayor and city council to dismiss Chief John Covington and the officers involved.  But the mayor asked all concerned to be patient:  “At this time I have no reason not to support my men and women in the police.  I support my chief.  I want to allow the process to take its course.”  Another activist speaker last night said, a month ago, he had concluded that waiting was the best course, but he said it has now been eleven weeks “and no answers.”
