Meeting to address groundwater contamination

A meeting in three weeks will address the problem of groundwater contamination at a closed Oconee landfill near Walhalla.  According to the county Solid Waste office, this meeting is designed for the public—especially those who live near the Five Forks Landfill near Camp Road and Five Forks Road.  The meeting takes place at 6 Tuesday night, October 18 at the offices of the Oconee Solid Waste at 15028 Wells Highway, Seneca.  The closed Class 3 landfill is unlined. Until 1995, it accepted both domestic and industrial waste.  According to the office of Solid Waste Director Swain Stihl, the state DHEC requested the county investigate potential remedial alternatives and identify corrective actions.  Comments and questions are welcome at this meeting.
