Memorial ground breaking on the 13th anniversary

ground breaking A symbolic ground break took place today near Walhalla for the 9-11 memorial that planners envision to be the finest of its type in the Southeast. It’s to showcase debris from each of the three locations where planes hijacked by terrorists were deliberately crashed. The location is property just north of where the new high school is being built. The ceremony that accompanied the groundbreaking fell on the 13th anniversary of the attack on the mainland. And it gave pause to state lawmaker Bill Whitmire and others who remember that day in American history. At the time Whitmire taught middle school social studies. “Out of that terrible tragedy, however, the world would seen Americans at their very best,” said Whitmire. The memorial will also showcase brave and selfless acts by all emergency responders. It’s the hope of the planners that the memorial will serve as a tool to educate young people and future generations about 9-11.
