Monday sports: Clemson/USC tumble in polls; No surgery for Shaw; NFL week 7
Clemson’s 51-14 loss to Florida State over the weekend cost the Tigers several spots in the latest AP and Coaches’ polls. South Carolina also dropped thanks to a 23-21 loss at unranked Tennessee Saturday afternoon. The AP moved Clemson down six spots to #9. Florida State moved into the number three slot, behind second place Oregon and Alabama. The Gamecocks dropped from 11th to 20th in the poll. Clemson dropped from third to 10th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ poll. Florida State took over the Tigers spot at number threee. South Carolilna is 20th in the Coaches’ ranking after holding down the number nine spot a week ago. Alabama and Oregon continue to hold the top two spots in that poll. In the BCS standings released Sunday, Clemson is #9, while South Carolina is #21. This weekend Clemson hopes to rebound at Maryland, while South Carolina faces a tough test at #5 Missouri.

Some good news for South Carolina. Quarterback Connor Shaw will not need surgery on his sprained left knee, and the senior is expected to be back at some point this season. Shaw was injured toward the end of Saturday’s loss at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

The St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox will face off in the World Series after they both wrapped up their League Championship Series over the weekend. The Cardinals shut out the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-0 on Friday to win the NLCS 4 games to 2, and Boston downed the Detroit Tigers 5-2 on Saturday to take the ALCS 4 games to 2. They will meet in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday in Boston.
