MONDAY SPORTS: Gamecocks move to 15-0

Freshman right-hander Wil Crowe struck out a career-high nine batters in eight scoreless innings and an Elliot Caldwell sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth was enough to help lift top ranked South Carolina to a 1-0 victory Sunday over Brown to sweep a three-game series at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks improve to 15-0. The Gamecocks tallied three shutouts this weekend and have eight shutouts in 15 games on the year.

The #15 Clemson Tigers totaled 16 hits en route to an 11-4 victory over Virginia Tech at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep. Clemson also upped its home winning streak over the Hokies to 17 dating to 1984.

Scott Coleman drew a bases loaded walk to force in Ryan Hodge for the game winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Gardner-Webb at 3-2 victory over visiting Furman Sunday afternoon at John Henry Moss Stadium in Boiling Springs, NC. The loss was the third straight for Furman (6-9) and second consecutive defeat where the Paladins failed to hold an eighth inning lead.

Clemson learned its ACC Tournament seed and opponent Sunday after the conclusion of the regular season. The Tigers are the No. 6 seed and face the winner of the opening round game between No. 11 Georgia Tech and No. 14 BostonCollege. The contest is scheduled for Thursday at 9 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Tigers were 3-0 against the Eagles and Yellow Jackets during the regular season.

Wichita State defeated Indiana State 83-69 on Sunday to bring their record to 34-0 and become the first team to enter the NCAA tournament with a perfect record since UNLV in 1991. The NCAA tournament field will be revealed next Sunday, and Wichita State is now certain to receive a Number 1 seed.

William Clay Ford, the owner of the NFL’s Detroit Lions, died on Sunday of pneumonia at age 88. Ford, the last surviving grandchild of automotive pioneer Henry Ford, bought the Lions 50 years ago in 1964.
