MONDAY SPORTS: Tigers defeat Eastern Michigan
Jay Baum went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and the go-ahead, run-scoring single in the eighth inning as #13 Clemson rallied for a 9-7 win over Eastern Michigan at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season. The Tigers trailed 7-6 entering the eighth inning before scoring three runs without hitting the ball out of the infield.
Seventh ranked South Carolina pounded out 17 hits including three homers and freshman right-hander Wil Crowe hurled 6.1 hitless innings in his first career start, as the Gamecocks defeated Bucknell 12-0 on Sunday afternoon to sweep the weekend series against the Bison. The Gamecocks are 3-0 on the year. Eight of nine position starters had at least one hit on Sunday.
The Furman baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader, dropping an 11-6 decision to Xavier at Latham Stadium before bouncing back to post a 13-5 win over Toledo at Fluor Field in the First Pitch Invitational sponsored by the Greenville Drive. The split give the Paladins a 2-1 record on the young season.
The East won the NBA All-Star game 163-155 over the West in New Orleans Sunday night, and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving was named the MVP. Irving had 31 points and 14 assists, while the New York Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony made a record eight 3-pointers and scored 30 points in the highest-scoring All-Star game ever. Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the L.A. Clippers’ Blake Griffin each finished with 38 points for the West, four shy of Wilt Chamberlain’s All-Star game record.
Americans Andrew Weibrecht and Bode Miller won silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s Super-G Sunday. Miller is the oldest Alpine skier to medal, at 36.
American gold medal favorites Meryl Davis and Charlie White finished in first place in the ice dancing competition after Sunday night’s short program. The free dance takes place Monday, when the couple — who took silver four years ago in Vancouver — will try to win the first-ever ice dancing gold medal for the U.S.
The U.S. men’s hockey team beat Slovenia 5-1 on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals.
NBC Olympics anchor Bob Costas is expected to return to the air Monday after being sidelined for several days with an eye infection. Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira have been filling in for him.
