MONDAY SPORTS: Tigers get past Maryland in double OT

In a game that featured 13 lead changes and two overtimes, Clemson prevailed 77-73 over Maryland in the final scheduled meeting between the two as ACC foes Sunday in Littlejohn Coliseum. Clemson’s win was its ninth in the ACC this season and pushed the Tigers to 18-10 overall. Clemson’s team achieved the ninth ACC win for only the ninth time in 61 seasons as a member of the conference.

The College of Charleston is a #6 seed in the upcoming CAA Basketball Championship in Baltimore. The Cougars will open with #3 seed William & Mary Saturday, March 8th.  If they win they will face the winner of Towson and James Madison in the semifinals.

In the NBA Sunday, Kevin Durant scored 28 points and Russell Westbrook had 26 to the lead the Oklahoma City Thunder past the Charlotte Bobcats 116-99.

Four consecutive two-out hits in the top of the ninth inning led to four runs as third ranked South Carolina rallied in the ninth inning for a 5-3 win vs. 11th ranked Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium to sweep the three-game series against the Tigers. The Gamecocks are now 10-0 on the year with Clemson dropping to 6-4 for the season.

Tyler Peyton pitched seven solid innings to lead Iowa past Furman, 8-2, in Sunday morning baseball action at the Stetson Invitational. The win gave the Hawkeyes (9-1) a three-game weekend tournament sweep while Furman (5-6) leaves town with two wins in its three games.

Tiger Woods pulled out of the final round of the Honda Classic on Sunday after 13 holes because of back spasms, a problem that had bothered him toward the end of the 2013 PGA Tour season. Woods, the world’s top-ranked player, was trailing leader Rory McIlroy by seven strokes when play began Sunday, and was 5-over for the day when he withdrew. He had shot his best round of the year, a 5-over 65, one day earlier. Russell Henley wound up winning the tournament in a four-man playoff for his second PGA Tour title.

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race got underway Sunday in Alaska, with 69 mushers beginning at WillowLake about 50 miles north of Anchorage en route to Nome, some 1,000 miles away. Among those taking place in the world’s most famous sled dog race are Mitch Seavey, last year’s champion, and his son, 2012 winner Dallas Seavey. Yesterday’s beginning of the race followed a ceremonial start Saturday in downtown Anchorage.
