MONDAY SPORTS: Tigers steady in AP poll; Bulldogs lose two for season; NFL week 5

*clemsonClemson’s win at Syracuse kept the Tigers at third in the latest Associated Press College Football Top 25 poll. Clemson is 5-0 and plays host to Boston College this week. The Tigers are behind top ranked Alabama and number two Oregon. South Carolina is now 4-1, but the way they are winning is causing them to lose ground with pollsters. A seven point win over Kentucky dropped the Gamecocks from 13th to 14th in this week’s poll. Miami moved past the Gamecocks to the 13 spot this week. Florida State, who will visit Clemson in two weeks, is number six. Georgia, coming off a scare at Tennessee is seventh in the poll. LSU is 10th.

*A rough Saturday for the Georgia Bulldogs following their overtime win at Tennessee. Coach Mark Richt said Sunday runningback Keith Marshall and receiver Justin Scott-Wesley will miss the remainder of the season with ACL injuries.

*In the NFL on Sunday, the Cincinnati Bengals held New England without an offensive touchdown as they hand the Patriots its first loss of the season, 13-6. New England quarterback Tom Brady’s streak of 52 consecutive games with a touchdown pass came to an end with the loss. Carolina quarterback Cam Newton was sacked seven times by the Arizona defense as the Cardinals defeat the Panthers 22-6. The Denver Broncos edged the Dallas Cowboys 51-48 in the fourth-highest scoring game in NFL history. Monday Night Football on ESPN will pit the Atlanta Falcons against the New York Jets at 8:30 PM from the Georgia Dome.

*The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 Sunday to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five National League Division Series. Game 4 is Monday night in Pittsburgh. The Los Angeles Dodgers pounded the Atlanta Braves 13-6 Sunday night to take a 2-1 lead in their NL Division Series. Game 4 will be played Monday night in Los Angeles.

*The Oakland A’s beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0 on Saturday to tie up their best-of-five American League Division Series at 1-1. Game 3 will be played Monday in Detroit. The Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in the AL Division Series. Game 3 will be played Monday night in Florida.

*The U.S. team won golf’s Presidents Cup for the eighth time in the last 10 competitions on Sunday, beating the International team. Tiger Woods clinched the U.S. victory for the third time in a row, beating South African Richard Sterne at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio.
