Mother’s Day weekend tragedies in Oconee

A 63-year old woman lost her life last night in an SUV-pedestrian accident near her Oakway home. Coroner Karl Addis says he will release the name of the deceased this afternoon. She was killed on South Carolina 24 near the 182 intersection shortly after 9 o’clock. Addis says it appears the woman was walking to her home after retrieving mail from a mailbox when she was struck by a westbound vehicle. The mailbox was on the opposite side of the two-lane highway from her home. According to the highway patrol the vehicle involved, a 2012 GMC SUV, was driven by Westminster resident Joshua Allen Cox. Neither Cox nor three passengers was hurt. The coroner calls what happened an accident, although a post-mortem exam will assist him in documenting the fatal injuries. A spokesman for the state troopers says the night was one of the worst in recent memories. Near Clemson in far eastern Oconee, an accident apparently destroyed the traffic control box for the 123-93 intersection. That has knocked out the traffic lights for that highway junction, and DOT crews were at the scene this morning. The accident resulted in personal injuries. The wreckage included a small, dark car demolished–apparently beyond repair.
