Motorists on the move this weekend!

At one Walhalla motor fuel stop this morning the proprietor was marking the price of a gallon of unleaded at $1.99.  And falling gas prices and a better economy are contributing to what’s predicted to be more cars and trucks on the road this holiday weekend.  AAA Carolinas predicts more than 450 thousand South Carolinians are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home.  For those driving, they can expect the lowest gas prices this Labor Day weekend in 11 years.Motorists can expect more traffic at Clemson as the Tigers open the season Saturday and at Darlington, where NASCAR’s Southern 500 takes place. The “Sober or Slammer” campaign by the Department of Public Safety and other member agencies of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Network will be in full force.  The program includes public awareness initiatives and high-visibility enforcement to remove drunken drivers from the roads and to curb accidents—especially those with fatalities.  By Tuesday this week, South Carolina counted 619 traffic deaths—an increase 95 from last year.
