New school scene of road improvements

The students who are entering a new Walhalla High School next week are getting what’s considered a school in tune with contemporary times.  Those who drive in the vicinity of the rural school can expect road improvements.  One of them is the elimination of a hard right turn for school buses and other traffic.  The improvement project at SC 11 and the Picket Post Road is being undertaken by maintenance workers from the South Carolina DOT.  Michael Smith, resident maintenance engineer, says, “This work will allow better turning radius for buses and other vehicles turning onto Picket Post Road and onto SC 11.”  Maintenance crews are also at work on the nearby Lecroy Road, to prepare for a widening and re-surfacing project funded by Oconee’s State C-Fund Committee.  They are moving ditches and pipe out of the way of travel lanes to permit the widening of a two-foot shoulder pavement.  The re-surfacing contract is scheduled to be awarded next month and will also cover Scenic Heights Road in West Union.
