New jail not needed, Mahn says

02/03/2012

One of the five Oconee sheriff's hopefuls says if it were his call, the county would not spend between $15 and $20 million to build a new jail, but would go at the problem of jail over-crowding by rebuilding the county Work Camp in Five Forks community between Walhalla and Westminster.  David Mahn says he wants prisoners who are not a danger to the public to work the fields surrounding the Work Camp for the food to feed them and the rest of their fellow inmates. The candidate says he wants prisoners convicted of less serious offenses to wash county cars and pick up litter.  Mahn makes clear he is not calling for a return to the days of chain gangs, with guards watching over prisoners shotguns at the ready.
