NFL, NBA, N.Y. Road Runners donating $1 million for Sandy relief

The sports world is helping in the recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy.  The NFL and the players’ union are combining to donate $1 million to the American Red Cross, and the league and its network broadcasters will also run pre-game and in-game TV messages to promote donations during this weekend’s games.  The NBA and its players’ union are also donating $1 million to the Red Cross and other organizations, including The Salvation Army, New York Cares and Jersey Cares. The NBA’s broadcast partners will also air messages to encourage fans to support the Red Cross’ relief efforts.  New York Road Runners, the organizers behind this Sunday’s New York City Marathon, will also donate a total of $1 million to a number of charities involved in the relief efforts, including the Red Cross.  There has been some controversy over the decision by Mayor Mike Bloomberg and the New York Road Runners to go ahead with the race while so many in the city are facing hardship and the city itself is dealing with so many challenges after the hurricane.

The New York Yankees have donated $500,000 to relief efforts through the Red Cross.
