No Child Left Behind rankings announced

Oconee public schools show improvement in newly-released report card ratings for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act—commonly known as No Child Left Behind. The Oconee district saw its rating improve, from 48th in the state last year to 33rd this year. Oconee’s elementary school rating increased. But both the ratings for the middle and high schools decreased. Mathematics continues to be strong within the district, but science is a concern—especially in the middle schools. Dr. Michael Thorsland, county superintendent, was described as generally pleased by the district performance. He said, “We remain focused on achieving our goal of being in the top ten districts in South Carolina.” Thorsland speaks today to the Westminster Rotary Club.
