Oconee establishes Adult Drug Court

May is National Drug Court Month, but until yesterday Oconee County missed out on the observance. That changed late yesterday afternoon with an announcement by Circuit Solicitor Chrissy Adams that the Seneca Magistrate’s Office will be the location for the court-supervised program for non-violent offenders with an alcohol or drug addiction. An adult drug program operates in Anderson County and two its successful enrollees were introduced at yesterday’s announcement as examples of those who will see their records expunged once they complete the program. Adams stressed the program is for the addicted, not for those who sell drugs. The program requires mandatory drug testing, treatment, aftercare, and sanctions for those who disobey court orders. Sheriff Mike Crenshaw is one who sees value of the project for Oconee County. With the county set to open a new jail, Crenshaw sees adult drug court as a cost-effective way to help substance-abusing offenders to become clean and sober and pay society back by being productive tax-paying citizens.
