Oconee supports harbor expansion

The seat of Oconee County government in Walhalla sits about as far away from the South Carolina coast as any  spot in the Palmetto State. But when it comes to commerce, the county leaders recognize the need to deepen the Charleston harbor. This week Oconee County Council approved a resolution to support deepening the harbor and shipping channel to allow larger ships. Many of those larger ships, according to the U-S Army Corps of Engineers, will soon be able to pass through the Panama Canal. District Two Councilman Wayne McCall, former Charleston County resident, joined Chairman Joel Thrift this week in speaking in favor of the resolution.
