Oconee to make formal application

Oconee County apparently is ready to make a formal request of Walhalla. And Sheriff Mike Crenshaw says if the application for an exception to the zoning law is approved for the jail at the latest location, “We’re ready to proceed.” Two years ago, an application for a variance to build the jail on the other side of the current LEC was turned down by the city. This time Walhalla has a new man in charge of zoning—James Ashton. If he says no this time, his decision would be appealable to the city board of zoning appeals. About the county’s intentions, Crenshaw said, “I’ve talked with Administrator Moulder and my understanding is our County Attorney is drafting the application to submit to the City of Walhalla.”
