Old St. John’s doors open this weekend

Old St Johns Meeting House Vanessa Penton says Saturday morning will make for an exciting time in Walhalla.  The executive director of the Greater Walhalla Area Chamber of Commerce says everyone is invited at 10:45 for the ribbon-cutting and dedication for Old St. John’s Meeting House on the grounds of the Depot.  Penton calls Old St. John’s another historic building saved—thanks to the efforts of Maxie Duke, Frank Strickland and others.  The city will offer the building for weddings, receptions and meetings.  Built in 1890, the architectural-styled “Carpenter’s Gothic” building was designed by the Rev. John McCullough and constructed by Master Builder John Kaufman, the builder of the LutheranChurch in Walhalla.  In an eight-year project that cost an estimated $200 thousand, the building was moved and restored by citizens, businesses, industries and civic organizations for the use of the people of Walhalla, Oconee County, and South Carolina.
