Our latest from 600 E. Main

September 14, 2013

Still some visible flames from what’s left of the roof over Walhalla Presbyterian Church, but the worst seems to have ended. Still, 600 E. Main remains a fire suppression scene, as well as a scene to investigate why this morning’s fire occurred. The state police are now there, but the Oconee fire chief says that’s routine any time fire strikes a South Carolina church. It was four summers ago that arson destroyed St. Luke United Methodist Church, across the street. That church was rebuilt, and a re-build, at least of some sort, is exactly what the Presbyterian Church will have to grapple with, according to information 96.3/WGOG NEWS learned near the scene. Look for the affected blocks of E. Main to be off-limits to motor vehicle traffic for much of the rest of the afternoon.
