Our worsening roads and bridges

Potholes in the roads and bridges that are left to deteriorate and risk collapse are safety and pocketbook issues for anyone who drives the U-S-A, but Senator Lindsey Graham says it’s also an issue that threatens the economic health of a county. And Graham referred today to Oconee County because he says unless the county can improve its infrastructure those who would invest here will look elsewhere. He announced an effort with California Senator Barbara Boxer to change the tax code that would incentivize American corporations to bring back investment in foreign lands and for the U-S to apply the revenues gained from that to help repair roads and bridges. But that’s only a partial solution, Graham said, to the country’s shortfall of $9 billion needed for infrastructure. He concedes that raising the gasoline tax could be another, though he worries about the potential impact on low income earners.
