The driver of an SUV swerved to avoid a deer last night in Oconee County and wound up down an embankment. The accident was reported at 11:30 last night at Seneca Creek near the Shiloh Road. Precipitation has begun to move back into South Carolina. Some of it is being reported as freezing rain and snow. Most counties reported rain and pavement conditions there are wet, according to the DOT. For the most part, roads were in good shape—but remember they are liable to deteriorate this morning with the arrival of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Temperatures in Oconee, Pickens and Spartanburg are reported between 28 to 33 degrees. According to the DOT, primary routes and bridges continue to be treated as needed. Light snow was reported in Oconee. The Ravenel Bridge at Charleston has closed because of icy conditions. Oconee County dispatchers are asking 96.3/WGOG NEWS to stress two things. Do not travel away from home unless necessary. In the event you lose power, make that first call to your power company. That’ll lessen the strain on county dispatchers who are liable to be busy handing other emergencies. Of course, 9-1-1 will always be there—-for whatever emergency or need the caller deems best. It goes without saying, but we’ll say it again—no school today. County and state government offices are closed. And that includes the libraries and solid waste facilities.
