Winner tallies three-vote margin

A resident of Schroder Street in West Union has been declared the unofficial winner of a seat on the town council. Last night’s tally gave Doug Moore 17 votes—three more than his only other ballot opponent, Chad Thomas. Thomas finished with 14. The two men sought to fill an unexpired term on the council.

Police chief resigns

After six years, the West Union chief of police has resigned. Mayor Linda Oliver says Mike Eppes has decided to take a position with another department. Oliver says her town will start to look for a replacement. Eppes’ resignation leaves West Union with one officer, Austin Watson.

Plaintiff’s lawyer: facility “chronically short-staffed”

An attorney for the plaintiff says an elderly Walhalla woman died in the hospital after being a patient in a nearby privately-run nursing and rehabilitation facility.
