Youngsters perish in Pickens County fire

The coroner in Pickens County reports two children dead in a Sunday morning home fire at Easley. Coroner Kandy Kelley says the deaths of four-year old Devin Dewayne Graham and seven-year old Timothy Lee Graham occurred at 4:35 a-m yesterday at 145 Daisy Lane. The deaths are being investigated by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.…

Flood warning extended to midnight

National Weather Service extended last night’s flood warning until the mid night hour. Once again, it was a July evening in which lots of rain hit the pavements and soaked the ground. Oconee County Dispatch reported the usual numbers of downed trees and, in last night’s instance, flooding along the Shiloh Road near Seneca.

Twelve Year-Old From Aiken Wins WGOG Singing Competition

Twelve year-old Allison Skipper, a student at Kennedy Middle School in Aiken, South Carolina, was crowned the winner Saturday night of 96.3 WGOG’s 11th-annual Texaco Country Showdown. A case of suspected arson!

The fire that heavily damaged a home near Westminster during the 5 o’clock hour this morning is under investigation as a case of arson, according to Jimmy Watt. The spokesman for the Oconee Sheriff’s Office says investigators this afternoon are following leads.  The fire occurred on the Cleveland Pike Road.

CU’s new budget is approved

Clemson University trustees have arrived at a new budget for the school year 2013-14. To reflect an approximate 5.5%, or $47 million increase in operational money, Clemson, in part, can thank a $7.5 million dollar increase in state appropriations. Trustee David Wilkins of Greenville was re-elected to serve a third, two-year term as board chairman.

The “Y” gets a new front person

Former Congressional worker to take on the job of establishing the first Oconee County YMCA. The job of “Y Executive Director goes to Daryl Broome, who served as an aide during Gresham Barrett’s time as South Carolina Third District Congressman. Broome succeeds Anna Connelly, who resigned to take a job elsewhere.
