Paladins defeat USC, Clemson wins; Braves now 2-0

In college baseball on Wednesday, Griffin Davis’ pinch-hit RBI double in the eighth inning scored Alex Abrams from first base to break a 5-5 tie and lift Furman to a 6-5 victory over 11th-ranked South Carolina  at Fluor Field in Greenville’s West End.  The win gave Furman (17-11) a season split with South Carolina (23-7) and marked the Paladins’ second win over the Gamecocks in the last three clashes at Fluor Field.

Elsewhere, Senior righthander Jonathan Meyer tossed 7.0 strong innings to lead Clemson to a 4-1 win over Gardner-Webb at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers improved to 18-11 on the season.

In the majors, Justin Upton, Jason Heyward and rookie Evan Gattis homered, helping Paul Maholm and  the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-2 at Turner Field on Wednesday night. The series continues Thursday at 7:00 PM
