Palmetto Trail meeting

The Palmetto Conservation Foundation wants to hear from the public on two additions to the Palmetto Trail in Oconee and Pickens counties.  A meeting for that purpose takes place from 6 to 7:30 Wednesday night at the Old St. John’s Meeting House in Walhalla.  Plans were announced last summer to extend the Palmetto Trail about 16 miles from downtown Walhalla to Oconee Station State Historic Site.  Officials Wednesday will introduce the first phase of construction on a new hiking-biking passage near Stumphouse Tunnel.  In Pickens County, plans are underway for a new hiking passage between Keowee-Toxaway State Park and the Dug Mountain fishing area at Eastatoe Creek and the Roy F. Jones Highway.  When completed, the Palmetto Trail will link Walhalla to Awendaw near Charleston, stretching across 14 South Carolina counties.
