Pay attention to the stopped school bus law

The public school year is already several weeks old, yet there remains questions about the law that applies when school buses stop to pick up children. According to South Carolina law, motorists on two lane roads in both directions must stop when a bus flashes amber/red lights. But motorists approaching a stopped bus from the opposite direction on roads with four or more lanes do not have to stop for a stopped bus. The minimum penalty for the first offense misdemeanor is a fine of $500 plus court costs or 30 days in jail, in addition to six points off your driver’s license. The Oconee Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists to be careful and use caution around bus stops and school zones. The Sheriff’s Office promises an increased presence in those areas during the morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-up times. Many school buses are now equipped with video cameras.
