Pickens County charities make “Angels” list

Two Pickens County charities made this year’s list of “Angels”—as compiled by the office of South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond. The Clemson Free Clinic and MARYS House of Pickens, along with eight other South Carolina organizations, were recognized during an event in Columbia. It was noted that they exemplify charitable giving. To be selected an Angel, the charity must devote 80% or more of its total expenditures to charitable programs and must be registered with the Secretary of State to solicit funds in South Carolina. Secretary Hammond also recognized a list of “Scrooges”—organizations that fail to spend a high percentage of their expenditures on charity. Among the list of scrooges is the Bennettsville-based Boyz of Gospel Incorporated.
