Prescribed burn near Cashiers

A 510-acre prescribed burn is planned this fall near Cashiers, North Carolina. Southeast of Cashiers and east of Silver Run Falls, the burn is planned by the U-S Forest Service and the NC Forest Service on private land. It’s one of four prescribed burns scheduled this fall in the Nantahala National Forest, with the others just west of Sylva. The purpose? To improve wildlife habitat and remove hazardous fuels. The goal is to restore a more open forest understory and, in some cases, a thinner forest. The safety of the fire fighters and the public is the number one priority. The public is asked to heed signs posted at trailheads and roads and to stay away from burn areas and closed roads and trails.
