Protecting children with asthma

At least one of every ten children in the U-S get the chronic illness asthma. Asthma attacks occur when the breathing tubes to the airways get irritated and plug up so it is hard to breathe. South Carolina Asthma Alliance has started a program to protect children. Mike Bowman, pediatric pulmonologist at the Medical University Hospital of South Carolina, recommends that children and their parents do at least one thing over the summer: make an appointment with your doctor. There is not yet a cure for the complex and widespread disease, but excellent care and control are often a phone call away.
