Public showing of Duke’s new Flex Dome

Duke Energy yesterday opened for a public tour its new concrete Flex Dome within the secure area on the grounds of the Oconee Nuclear Station.   It’s a facility to store specialized equipment that would be needed in a scenario of what’s almost unthinkable—a major earthquake or flood conditions, or both.  A small bus and a large van were used to shuttle interested members of the public from the World of Energy inside the plant property for a look inside the dome.  The evening was part of an event sponsored by “FOLKS”—Friends of Lake Keowee which featured a presentation by Scott Batson, Oconee Nuclear site vice president, about safeguards that the electric utility now has in place five years after the Japan nuclear disaster.
