Public sounds off on when music becomes noise

Before delving into when the loudness of a piece of music becomes unacceptable, Oconee planning commissioners entertained comment from the audience at last night’s meeting. Four people spoke, including former planning commissioner Andi Heller. A Lake Keowee resident, Heller complained that late at night her bedroom, with the windows closed and the air-conditioning running, she can hear music played from a houseboat from a distance so far that she cannot see the boat. The commissioners also heard from Gary Littlefield and John Adams. A fourth speaker, Tim Hydrick, representing the Cabana at the Lighthouse, told the commissioners that the music played from an open-air setting of the Cabana on Lake Keowee is acoustic. “We want to be good neighbors,” he said. Hydrick said he is not aware of any complaints made about the acoustic music played at the Cabana.
