Purple Heart marker dedicated

Oconee County now has something new, besides an annual breakfast, to remember and pay tribute to its Purple Heart military veterans. In the midst of Veterans Day weekend, a large crowd gathered on Walhalla’s Main Street in front of Veterans Park for the dedication and unveiling of the Military Order of Purple Heart Chapter 748 Monument Dedication. The event attracted a handful of Purple Heart veterans and their families, along with James Miller, the Department of SC Purple Heart Commander. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U-S armed forces “wounded by an instrument of war at the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin who are killed in action or who died of wounds received in action. It is specifically a combat decoration.”
