Red Cross assists Keowee Key fire victims

A fire that started in a bedroom has taken a heavy toll in Keowee Key. Yesterday morning’s fire at 2 Calm Sea Drive, near the North entrance to the home development, broke out around 7:30. Two adults got out of the house safely, but the fire killed two pets. The American Red Cross is assisting the fire victims. Chief Richie Caudle says, so far, the cause of the home fire is unknown. Fire units from Oconee and Pickens counties responded. The high winds of Saturday night made for a busy time for many of Oconee’s emergency crews. At one point, crews had responded to more than 40 incidents of structure fires, brush fires, trees blocking road, and down electrical lines. Fallen trees caused extensive power outages in Keowee Key, Newry, Westminster, Tamassee, and Seneca. According to Mayor Dan Alexander, service to estimated 200 to 300 Seneca customers was returned by 2:45 yesterday morning.
