Salem leaders unite

The mayor of Salem and the four-member town council are unanimous in their support of their town’s middle and high school.  During a meeting last night, they approved a resolution in support of the Tamassee-Salem Middle/High School and will carry that resolution to read during next week’s meeting of the county trustees.  Mayor Diane Head expressed the hope that school supporters will use social media to once again fill the meeting rooms at school district headquarters.  Trustees Chairman Andy Inabinet has said a recommendation to close the school after the current year will be on the agenda for Monday night’s voting meeting, but he’s uncertain if a vote will be cast.  The council passed the resolution after hearing community member Lorraine Lee express worry.  She asked, “What’s going to happen to our town?”  Concerns were raised during last night’s meeting about whether the addition of Tamassee-Salem students at Walhalla would mean for athletic sports competition—specifically whether the increased numbers would push Walhalla from a 3-A to a 4-A school.
