Scam warning from Sheriff’s Office

Law enforcement hopes to turn the tables on a telephone caller who claims to be a law enforcement officer. Around 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Oconee County Dispatch received a complaint from a man who said his wife had received a call from an individual who claimed an outstanding warrant required her to buy a Green Dot card but not to tell anyone. The caller identified himself as Lt. Adams and that he was from the warrants division in Westminster. But when dispatch dialed the caller’s number the caller hung up after being told they were from the Oconee Sheriff’s Office. A second complainant said she received a similar call from a Lt. Adams with the Walhalla Police Department. Further investigation by deputies revealed the calls may be coming from a prison in Camilla, Georgia. “Green Dot cards are something that scammers love to use,” according to Jimmy Watt, public information officer for the Oconee Sheriff’s Office. “Once a scammer has the pin number for the cards, it is very easy obviously for them to obtain money off the cards without any problems….” If someone tries this scam on you, you should hang up and call your local law enforcement agency.
