School District separates from behavioral camp

Effective September 22, the Oconee School District ended its relationship with a behavioral camp in Tamassee.  Camp Ghigau is operated by the Clemson Youth Learning Institute, but the school district by contract provided a teacher and two assistants for the program.  But the school district’s Steve Hanvey says, “When it was brought to our attention that other districts were not paying to staff their DJJ (Department of Juvenile Justice) sites. we contacted the State Department to investigate why we were being required to pay.  After talking with several different folks, we made the determination that we should not pay CYLI for the services they provide at the Camp and we voided the contract.”
