Above all others, there are two goals which Oconee public schools will pursue. The trustees last week retreated to Lake Jocassee’s Devil’s Fork State Park for a planning meeting. And, at last night’s regular meeting, Dr. Michael Thorsland, the superintendent, said the first goal is to “quantify” the district’s goal of attaining top 10 district status in South Carolina. School leaders have laid out a specific goal of reaching at least an 82% graduation rate. The second headline goal, according to Thorsland, is to place the district on a solid financial footing by balancing future budgets without having to reply on the district’s reserve account, its fund balance.
